Why donate to Able Bodied?
Our mission is to help people with disabilities around the world connect and experience “able bodied” adventures. We will achieve this by building a global network of adaptive athletes who are willing to share their experiences and help others explore the world without limits.
We have a three part strategy
1. Increase awareness of electric assist handcycling by offering free lessons and building a global network of “Able Bodied Ambassadors” through our Get 1 Help 2 program (we help users get funding for their handcycle in exchange for them helping at least two people get into handcyling).
2. Decrease the cost of owning an e-assist handcycle from over $10,000 to under $2,000 by open sourcing our electric assist handcycle conversion guides and innovations.
3. Build an interactive map of adaptive sports centers, Able Bodied Ambassadors, adaptive equipment owners, and travel guides that will help disabled people explore this world without limits.
2024 Top 3 Highlights
We officially launched as a 501c3 California non-profit in May of 2024, but have been offering free handcycling lessons since 2021 initially as part of NorCal SCI. We have a solid board of directors and a simple mission to help people with disabilities around the world connect and experience “able bodied” adventures. So far we have
1. Launched a second Able Bodied lesson location in Sebastopol CA with a full suspension dual motor Lasher handcycle. This handcycle will give us the ability to hold off-road events. The second location will make it a lot easier for disabled people in the north bay to learn about e-assist handcycling.
2. Expanded our Get 1 Help 2 program with a young father who was able to take his 8 year old son handcycling by the ocean. This is a key growth strategy for us as each “able bodied ambassador” will promise to help at least two people get their bike and ultimately grow our physical footprint virally.
3. Delivered an e-assist handcycle to a very deserving boy in Ukraine (see blog post). Paralyzed at the age of 9 from a gun shot, lost his father in the war in 2023, but still full of positive energy and a thirst for adventure. He is riding his new handcycle daily with his twin brother Marek (pictures). He will be the perfect “Able Bodied Ambassador” in Ukraine.
