You can donate stock and write off the full value of the stock and pay no capital gains taxes, even if you bought it for significantly less. This is the most efficient way to give. If you want to make a stock donation, just send an e-mail to donate@ablebodied.org and we will send you back our account info and transfer instructions. We will send you a donation receipt when the transfer is completed.

Example: You bought 1 share of Google for $20, but it is worth $200 today. If you donate that share to us you get to write off $200 as the donation, which will reduce your tax bill by ~0.43 * $200, or $86. If on the other hand you sold your stock for $200, you would owe $63 in capital gains taxes (11.3% CA, 3.8% medicar, 20% long term capital gains) or only get $137 to spend. So in the first example you will receive $86 to spend in your tax return and you will have given Able Bodied $200 to further our cause. In the later example you would get $137 to spend. So you could basically give Able Bodied $200 for only $51 out of your pocket and chances are your feeling of satisfaction for helping others will far exceed that amount.

BTW, we also accept donations from Donor Advised Funds. You should be able to find out charity when you look for “Able Bodied Inc” and they will send us a check by mail. If you do not know about donor advised funds, watch this video.
